FRRB firmly believes that a fairer and more inclusive future is built through knowledge and innovation. As stated in the foreword to the document Personalized Medicine – Development Potential of Precision Medicine in the Lombardy Region, “We cannot hope for a fair and inclusive future if we do not understand that, to achieve it, we must increasingly focus on the knowledge society.”

FRRB’s mission is to support and promote research and innovation in the biomedical field at regional, national, and international levels. We do this by funding original and innovative research projects, with the goal of improving citizens’ quality of life and strengthening the Lombardy Healthcare System.

Investing in knowledge and research is the path toward a fairer and more sustainable tomorrow for all.

Since 2015, FRRB has funded biomedical research projects selected through competitive procedures, participating in regional and European calls as a funding body.

The calls issued by FRRB finance projects that help to better understand specific diseases, describe their natural history, identify risk factors and biological mechanisms, and assess the safety and effectiveness of healthcare interventions (drugs, medical devices, vaccines, surgical procedures, and therapies). In recent years, attention has increasingly shifted toward initiatives aimed at improving diagnosis and prevention—for example, through the development of diagnostic tests, biomarkers, or screening algorithms—promoting the rapid introduction of innovative treatments and the phasing out of obsolete or ineffective practices.

As shown in the graph below, the research areas covered by FRRB funding are diverse, in order to address all the needs and demands of the Lombardy region.
