In line with the guidelines of the Lombardy Region (National Health Research Program (PNRS) 2024-2026), scientific findings, and patient needs, the new FRRB collaborative research call aims to develop and implement biomedical research in the field of personalized and precision medicine, responding to the medical needs of the region and stimulating the establishment of partnerships between the Regional Health System, universities, and research centers in Lombardy to strengthen inter-institutional collaboration.
Specifically, the projects that FRRB intends to fund with this call for proposals should focus on the repetitive cycle “Bedside to bench to bedside,” the essential cycle of translational medicine, where clinical insights inform laboratory research, which in turn should enrich clinical practice with new data/results. This is a dynamic process of continuous improvement in the healthcare sector, in which observations derived from patient care contribute directly to scientific investigation, leading to innovations that ultimately benefit patients once again. This iterative cycle is fundamental to advancing medical knowledge and improving the healthcare system, specifically in Lombardy.
The thematic areas identified by the call for proposals are:
1. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (its application in innovative technologies, diagnostics, and therapies)
2. PRECISION MEDICINE AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION
3. LONG COVID-19: CARDIO-PULMONARY DISEASES: cardio-pulmonary diseases
4. ENDOCRINE-METABOLIC PHYSIOPATHOLOGY (prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of related diseases)
As with previous regional calls for proposals, each project must be carried out in Lombardy and fit into a context of Personalized Medicine, demonstrating its potential to transfer the results of the funded research to the Regional Healthcare System, taking into account the ethical, social, and health implications of the research results.
FRRB, which has always been committed to gender equality and equal opportunities, has established for this call for proposals the obligation to adhere to gender equality within the proposing partnerships; in addition, in order to support young talent, it will reward the involvement of young people under 40 in research groups with the award of an additional bonus during the evaluation process.
The recipients of the grant are partnerships composed of a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 entities chosen from among ASSTs, Health Protection Agencies (ATS), Regional Emergency Agencies (AREU), public and private IRCCS, universities, and research organizations, all with operational headquarters in Lombardy.
The role of lead entity may be assumed by an ASST, an ATS, or a public or private IRCCS.
Maximum grant available: €2,000,000 per individual project lasting 36 months. Each partner must bear at least 15% of the total project costs.
Further information on the participation requirements can be found in the text of the call for proposals and the documents attached to it in the ‘Documents to download’ section.
